Robin Hood Case Study Discussion Essays

Robin Hood Case Study Discussion Essays Robin Hood Case Study Discussion Paper Robin Hood Case Study Discussion Paper 1. Depict how Robin Hood built up his underlying technique for rivaling the sheriff of Nottingham and talk about how he executed it. Scrutinize this methodology. The first issue meaning of high tax collection that confronted the individuals gave route for another market which was raged by Robin Hood. Apparently an unlawful demonstration, his strategic to â€Å"steal from the rich, and provide for the poor†. As he entered the market, he was confronted with contention of the sovereign and the sheriff. Robin Hood and his band of Merry men took from the rich and provided for poor people which is in reality is totally inverse to the activities of his adversaries. As Robin Hood entered the current specialty showcase he picked up prominence and backing among the basic people as he was providing a one of a kind decent/administration. He offers a free assistance to the poor after his working costs are represented. Additionally, the individuals had an inclination for his item and strategies were not handily coordinated or replicated by the opposition. By acquiring this help, this methodology was for his potential benefit against Prince John and the sheriff. The assessment of various regular people would have convinced Prince John to change the law of out of line tax collection. Robin immediately understood that there was little he could do himself; which prompted improvement of the association by invigorating HR. He looked for close partners who might follow his vision of retribution for the sheriff and the sovereign. These men would go about as immediate subordinates, anyway as time progress, induction was permitted with less examination whereby the main deciding component was dependability. He accepted quality lay in numbers. Robin actualized his technique of ‘strength in numbers’ by looking for discipline from his band of men which guaranteed solidarity in the association. This was accomplished through a particular division inside the hierarchical chain of command. Accordingly they turned out to be all the more remarkable in their fight against the sheriff. This constrained the Merry Men to live outside the law which was additionally wanted to increase adequate control in the gathering. This association was genuinely straightforward. Evaluate By procuring a huge degree of subordinates, Robin acquired a work power that isn't really prepared as he permitted any to join who posed hardly any inquiries. In doing as such, additional worker hours would need to be spent in preparing. Additionally if prescreening of the new participants existed, utilizing the contestants with existing aptitudes can give path for an increasingly effective association. I. e. ranchers would have been utilized not for war yet for food. As the biggest inner quandary confronted the band was an expanded gathering size framework, supplies and other physical assets would rapidly decrease. In this way cutting expense ought to be need, hence tradeoffs can be made by utilizing talented specialists for characterized work. E. g. famers and trackers With the perfect of ill-advised meeting, his association could be effortlessly penetrated by his rivals in this manner alleviating their arrangement and procedures. 2. Recognize authoritative attributes and condition qualities that would lead you to think robin hood is astute to considering an adjustment in methodology as he enters his crusade second year? Robin’s association could be viewed as one of a pecking order, he is the most elevated individual in the association which can place him in jobs, for example, C. E. O. or on the other hand executive. His duty is to appoint explicit assignment to his lieutenants, each has their own capacities which adds to the accomplishment of the happy men as a unit. For instance Will Scarlett was doled out the significant errand of shadowing the sheriff and advising the happy men of the sheriff next move. Figure 1: Robins Organizational Hierarchy The inspiration of the band was imperative to keeping them intrigued by the reason for the grudge. Inspiration hypothesis looks to clarify a wide range of propelled conduct in various circumstances, remembering conduct for the associations. Since most of conduct is sense roused, people are incredibly affected by their condition. Maslow’s hypothesis of human inspiration, all individuals have a need or want for sense of pride, confidence, and regard from others. This legitimately applies to the Merry Men, for they looked for regard and were pleased with their popular saying â€Å"Rob from the rich and provide for the poor†. The resourced based model was significant in the achievement of the gathering; five components were taken a gander at which the band exhibited assets, capacity, upper hand, appealing industry, procedure detailing and usage. The asset of the gathering originated from the traders that movement through the woods, at first the asset was consistently accessible however t was rapidly getting meager as dealers was picking an alternate course. The men were appropriately prepared to design their theft and handy in their bows and arrows, notwithstanding, the convergences of newcomers were starting to strain the stores of the gathering as preparing and food was exorbitant. Robin and the joyful men had the help from their clients which were the workers and ranchers however now as pay was low and the upkeep cost was high they would need to burden the very individuals which they helped implying that the laborers and ranchers could turn on them and add to their difficulties. Understanding the asset base of the gathering I could perceive any reason why an adjustment in methodology was shrewd. Figure 2: Resourced Based Model Robin and his association were in emergency because of absence of a legitimate corporate technique. The joyful men were developing, with huge number of newcomers yet the natural structure isn't firm. Correspondence and order is being separated, table 3 beneath gives a few alternatives robin could utilize and their SWOT examination. | Opportunities | Threats | Strengths| SO Strategies: Kill the Sheriff * Wipe him out, no more issues * Has the men to do it When the sheriff is gone, disband. ST Strategies: Join the nobles * Has the battling power * Get access to capital markets * Maybe closes the contention quicker| Weakness | WO Strategies: Limit size of band * Turn the battling band into a gathering of elites * Maintains discipline * Solves food issues * Basically, diminish growth| WT Strategies: Disband * Give up the reason, come back to typical life * Robin escapes to another nation to escape punishment| Figure 3: SWOT Matrix Problems Robin and his association confronted: * Lack of order Maintenance cost * Shelter/space deficiency * Food lack * preparing * security and carefulness (whoever needed to join was taken in and there could be double crossers and spies) These issues should be address if the band is to get any opportunity against the sheriff and ruler John. 3. Expect that Robin Hood has requested that you assist him with concocting another procedure. Distinguish a lot of components for him to consider in updating technique. It was obvious from the story that Robin Hood expected to change his methodology inferable from both inside and outer components. An uncontrolled workforce alongside inadmissible provider area prompted the edge of financial practicality. Changing the general objective of his association to fixed travel tax assessment would diminish his upper hand over the Sheriff. Thus the expense of courtesies which Mr. Hood gave to the regular society would increment. In the event that he picks this way he would lose his devoted supporters which kept him in charge of the cornered market. The ranchers and townspeople would then support Prince John’s administration and depend on his pity for items. In case of this circumstance Robin Hood’s principle adversary, The Sheriff would get more grounded considering his political association with the sovereign. In spite of the fact that his work power was continually developing, its efficiency was minor. He guaranteed that he was inexperienced with an enormous populace of his association. It would be in Robin’s wellbeing to rebuild his work power. He would increase a favorable position by decentralizing the group into a few self supporting units; every unit comprising of group chief, lieutenants and random subordinates. Much the same as a diversified association, each group unit would be working under the Robin Hood brand name, have a similar objective as Robin, and work inside the restrictions of Robin. This structure would be less requesting to co-ordinate and permit him to devise exchange systems. Since Robin likewise had an issue with a complete Sherwood Forest area, this structure would likewise help his camouflage from his providers, the rich trader explorers and the Sheriff. It is an impulsive decision for Robin to redirect from his center competency and significant expertise of banditry. The adjustment in calling may prompt an absence of excitement which would reflect ineffectively through the eyes of his devotees and his image name. Application Processing and Receipt of Documents Update COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog I just wanted to provide a quick update regarding the tracking of application documents.   If documents are still listed on the application site as not received you do not need to panic and email or call our office.   The processing of files in our office is partially driven by when certain Committee members can read.   We thus expedite the processing of files that meet a certain set of reader criteria. For example, we want readers to be able to review applicants that share a common academic interest.   The timing of when a file is completed and then read has no impact on the admission decision. If you are confident that you have sent materials you can rest assured that your file will be completed and forwarded for review.   We still have several thousand documents that need to be matched to files and we are working as quickly as we can.   Because of internal processing requests we are unable to respond to individual requests concerning the receipt of documents.   Rest assured that if we need anything from you we will let you know and we will be happy to work with you to make sure your file is complete and forwarded to the Admissions Committee. Thank you for your patience and we look forward to completing and reviewing all files.   Decisions will start to go out in March and will be available via the application site.

How A Woman Can t Have It All By Managing A Career And...

Anne-Marie Slaughter wrote an article about how a woman can’t have it all by managing a career and family. Ellen Ullman wrote an article how she was a computer programmer for a company that didn’t have many women work in that field. It has become common today to dismiss the debates in the workplace for twenty-first-century women that have a family and work to balance. Many people used to think that high-profile jobs were for men and that woman stayed home to watch the family. Within the past few decades’ women have started to do the jobs that men were doing to help the husband and the family. Both authors elaborated on the way their work is set and how hard they both succeeded to get to where they are now. While both Slaughter and Ullman†¦show more content†¦And by all, he meant three, but at the time, it was rare for women to have a well-placed technical position. Both Ullman and Slaughter were faced with sexism in the workplace and found ways to ignor e it. However, they also faced different social structures in the workplace. Ullman believes women today face a new, more virile and virulent sexism. She found that being a woman put her at one remove from the general society of programmers. And that the rule of law and social activism certainly are crucial. Ullman claims that, â€Å"No matter how strong the social structure, there is always that cheeked-slapped moment when you are alone with the anti-woman prejudice: the joke, the leer, the disregard, the invisibility, the inescapable fact that the moment you walk through the door you are seen as lesser, no matter what your credentials† (729). She meant that no matter how hard you succeeded in your education, you’d always be seen fragile. Ullman also stated that staring prejudice in the face imposes a spiteful discipline: to structure anger, to achieve a certain dignity, an enraged dignity. On the other hand, Slaughter had claimed that â€Å"women of her generation have mai ntained to the feminist stance, that they were raised with, ranks had steadily thinned by indeterminable pressures between family and career, because they were determined not to drop the flag for the next generation women† (680). The Death Of The Coffin - 1660 Words

The imagery suggests that the mother, who is the carpenter, gives life to her child, the coffin. Ahab referred to the carpenter as â€Å"Prometheus,† a titan, a silkworm spinning its own shroud out of itself (Leiter 1958). This, I think is Melville’s way of connecting the coffin’s obvious meaning of death to life. The carpenter as Prometheus symbolizes God who gives birth or in other words life to death. The coffin then acts as a life buoy for Ishmael specifically, when it carries him over to safety at the end of the novel. Ishmael and the coffin, both tossed up by the Pequod—rigged out like a whale—also like Job by the Whale of God, become Prophets who deliver the message of God to the world (Leiter 1958). In a way then, the coffin also symbolizes the universe, man, his life, and his death. It is a symbol of the fate of man here on this earth. Ishmael is saved because he—unlike Ahab, whose view of the condition of man is so monolithic and pr etty much insane—has reached a state not only of understanding man’s role in the universe, but he has also achieved acceptance of that role. â€Å"Wedded† to Ishmael earlier in the novel, Queequeg points the way to sanity, neither through destructive internal questioning, nor through acceptance of religious prophecies, but by what he is. After meeting his other half in Peter Coffin’s inn, which is decked out like a whale, Ishmael says, â€Å"As I sat there in that lonely room†¦I began to be sensible of strange feelings. Kochansak and Aksan Free Essays

Introduction Compliance is a word described as the willingness of a person to follow an instruction from another person at a given time. It is a major concern of children’s parents and teachers because compliance will help a child follow simple orders at home by his or her parents and follow rules and regulations in the school. Body There are two kinds of compliance according to the book of Kochanska and Aksan, the â€Å"situational compliance† and the â€Å"committed or receptive compliance†; however these kinds of compliance have various distinctions. We will write a custom essay sample on Kochansak and Aksan or any similar topic only for you Order Now Situational compliance is based on an expectation of reward and punishment that is why a child obeys the parent even without the sincere commitment and obligation because the child is either afraid of the punishment for not obeying or the child is eager of the reward for obeying. On the other hand committed or receptive compliance is based on the child’s willingness to cooperate; it is of his or her freewill to do what is asked for him or her to do. Furthermore, the committed or receptive compliance is the more advanced form of compliance and it is associated with the child’s internalization. In the compliance study of Kochanska and Aksan they found out that children found it easier to comply with â€Å"don’t touch† instructions that â€Å"clean up† instructions. The development of compliance is of important value because of its role in the internalization of a child’s moral value, self-control, autonomy and socialization. The second and the third year of a persons life is important for developing these skills, the child’s ability to develop self-regulation starts at this age. This skill of a child comes along with the cognitive capability to understand commands made by their parents and the ability to carry the commands. And there is such a time that when a child becomes more able to comply he or she would be less willing to comply, a function of the child’s increasing autonomy. As the child grows older, he or she becomes more cooperative but with an increasing skill in the use of negotiation strategies, this is to get what he or she wants (Kochanska 1995). In another study it shows that fathers are more direct in their request for compliance; let’s say for example a father will say â€Å"pick up your toys† directly to the child, in this way the children are likely to oblige because of the authority over them. On the other hand mothers are more indirect and more affectionate with regards to their requests for compliance, and they make use of bargain system to make the child obey to what they are requesting; for example mothers would say â€Å"please go to bed now†, â€Å"if you clean your room I will buy the toy that you want†, these are some of the requests mothers make. In this manner the children will likely to comply with their mothers request because of the reward waiting for them or the affection that they felt (1995). Proposed explanation There are various thoughts that I want to propose in the findings of Kochanska and Aksan; why the children find it easier to comply with the â€Å"don’t touch† instructions than â€Å"cleaning up† instructions. The reasons I think are as follows. A. it is easier to command a child not to touch things rather than cleaning things up because children do not want to be manipulated and given instructions as of to fix things or to clean things up. B. another aspect is because children thinks it is better not to touch things rather than to bother fixing them and putting them in place after because it is a lot of work to do. Children are of course some kind of lazy and they think that these little tasks are big deal and that they cannot do it. C. Third aspect of this is that children make use of the bargain system to get what they want; for example they would only clean things up if they are given a reward for the task they did. This is situational compliance, in which the child is expecting for something in return for the price of complying. Test Design With regards to the proposed explanations above, a test is to be designed to be able to test if the proposed explanations are true or not and if the explanations are accurate or not. In this test we are going to need 20 children of the same age, children who are in the pre-school because children of this stage are more able to comply but less willing to comply. The children would be asked to do 2 things also, either to â€Å"fix their toys and get a reward† or just simply â€Å"sit down and play†. In this way we would be able to know if the children wanted to comply with things because they are going to get something out of it, more likely a situation compliance or if children just simply comply with things because it is what they wanted to do or what we call committed compliance. We ought to ask the 20 children individually which of the choices they want to oblige. This study aims to know if children of this stage are more of a situation compliance or committed compliance, and this also aims to measure the willingness of the children to comply with little tasks. In the end of the study we would be able to know if the proposed explanations are true if more children fixed their toys for the reward they are going to get. Reference: 1. Age Restrictions on Alcohol Relative to Military Eligibility Essay free essay sample

This is a topic that was near and dear to my husband’s heart. As he is in the military, it comes up often during mobilizations for deployment. I drink very little, so I hadn’t given it much consideration until he was deploying himself. I think that military personnel under the age of 21 should be allowed to consume alcoholic beverages under supervision. We have two sons that joined the National Guard at the ages of 17years and 19 years old. The legal age to purchase and consume alcohol in this state is 21 years of age. Our sons were pretty quickly deployed to Iraq. Granted, they didn’t drink at the time, but under the circumstances: I think that if their squads and platoons had offered them beer before going away to war, there should be no qualms about it. If they are able to go off and risk their safety or their lives, then there should not be a problem with having two beers with their buddies. We will write a custom essay sample on Age Restrictions on Alcohol Relative to Military Eligibility Essay or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Compared to college freshmen, there is a lot of supervision and control in a military environment. On campuses around the country, binge drinking is prevalent and sometimes problematic. This is not to say that it doesn’t happen in the military but there is so much more structure to the lifestyles of soldiers, sailors, etc. College and high school campuses provide much more independence. Teens often sneak into their parents bars when their away and imbibe without supervision, and most often without parental consent. My husband entered military service in 1985 and he says that then it was the norm for the military to have two beers during lunch. It was being phased out, but the older soldiers held to the tradition. There were quite a few Vietnam vets still in at that time. When he went to Germany, they would have beer tents set up after exercises and all of the soldiers would be allowed to drink their fill. During the nineties, the policy changed to the State’s legal age, based on the location of the particular Post or Base. Currently, the military is campaigning to deglamorize the abuse of alcohol. They have â€Å"Don’t Be That Guy† awareness posters, playing cards, and even a website; along with regularly required training sessions. If anyone has an alcohol related incident, that soldier is counseled. If there is another incident, the soldier is then referred by the Commander to the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program (ASAP). Based on the length of time in the military, a younger soldier is allowed one misstep or mistake. More experienced soldiers and those with rank and responsibility aren’t given such leeway. For instance, a Driving under the Influence (DUI) charge is a career ender for a non-commissioned officer, but a lower enlisted soldier will be given a chance to rehabilitate. There have been cases of parents here in this State having closed door parties for graduation and proms. Those parties caused a lot of controversy. The parents were there to supervise in most cases, but there were a couple of cases of no supervision. Those parents argued that as long as they were there to oversee what was going on, there shouldn’t have been such an outrage. Those that argued against it felt that they were being enablers. I can see both sides of the argument. I wouldn’t host such an event personally, but I won’t frown upon those parents who chose to do this for their children. In Europe, it is common for teenagers to have a glass of wine with their dinner in a family setting. There doesn’t seem to be any of the stigmas of consumption of alcohol there. Given the supervision and the amount of reinforcement in the military, I believe that young people in uniformed services should be allowed to have limited consumption of alcohol under direct supervision. If they are old enough and eligible to serve our country, then there should be an exception to policy or a waiver of some sort.

Fools Crow essays

Fools Crow essays James Welch tells of many of the Lone Eaters traditions and practices in Fools Crow. Few of have had the emphasis and meaning that is placed in the ceremony of the Sun Dance and praise of the Sun Chief. There are many reasons and ways the people worship the Sun Chief, some that can be explained and some that will never be understood. The people of the tribe have many gods that they call the Above Ones. None is more important and reverenced in such a way as the Sun Chief. I now pray to you to grant us abundance in summer and health in winter (Welch 112). He is prayed to for all sorts of things including long life, plentiful harvest, water, and good animals. The god of the sun is their god above gods. The Sun Chief is what Zeus was to the ancient Greeks. They pray to other gods, but they are lower gods or messengers to the supreme one. He is built a lodge and prayed and sacrificed to, once a year. After the people believed the pray was successful they have hope and good feeling going into the next year. I believe our father, Sun Chief, is satisfied with us. (Welch 121). He was to bring them rain at the right time, thick and everlasting blackhorns, pity to the poor, and healing to the sick. This ceremony was definitely a pivotal time in the essence of the Lone Eaters and Black Feet people. Heavy Shield Woman has the most important role of anyone in the rituals honoring the Sun Chief. She was chosen to be the leader of the prayer to him and this role is as momentous of a challenge and honor that there is in the tribe. Basically, the whole fortune of the people for the next year rests on her shoulders. If you are successful, the Pikunis will prosper and enjoy favor with the spirit world. If you fail, if you are not strong or virtuous enough, great harm will come to us (Welch 102). For all the good the Sun Chief could bring to the people, he could also bring bad and that would be blamed directly on ...

OBESITY IN CHILDREN Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

OBESITY IN CHILDREN - Research Paper Example This indicates how the situation has become alarming over the years and hence, has drawn the attention of many researchers and scholars who feel that it can be the reason for an alarming situation in the years to come. They fear that a very high number of the population in the next generation would be victims of obesity-induced diseases such as coronary heart problems, cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure. Furthermore, the obese children find difficulty in leading a normal childhood because their weight and body structure make it difficult for them to carry out normal activities done by the children. This study explores the subject of obesity in children in the United States in detail. Through a review of literature as well as a review of empirical research studies, it would aim to understand the prevalence, incidence, relative risk, causes and preventive measures about obesity in children. Review of Literature Obesity in very terms is defined as the excess amount of fat in the body. While there is no standard definition for both obesity in children as well as in adults, medical practitioners use two main yardsticks to qualify a child as obese. The first and the most popular yardstick is known as the body mass index or BMI (the weight of an individual in kilograms divided by the height in meters). Obesity is determined based on this BMI. The second yardstick is to compare with a standard of weight measurements. If the weight of the child is 20% higher when compared to the average weight, or body fat percentage is higher than 25% from the standard percentage, then the children are classified as obese (Filozof et al, 2002). Most doctors evaluate a child for obesity only after they are around 3-4 years and do not consider fat children below 1-2 as obese. Nowadays, with the high rate of increase, obesity is considered as a medical condition that requires timely medical intervention. Traditionally, obesity is linked to the rate of metabolism, because it dep ends on the rate of the energy expenditure of the body. Therefore, the body slowly moves into the condition of obesity. One of the major issues with obesity in children is that it is very difficult to keep it in control and the process of getting the body to normal is gradual (Ogden, Carroll and Flegal). The primary negative effect of the condition of obesity is serious health threat that it brings along. Childhood is an period of life where the body grows and develops. The way in which this development happens determines the health in the future. However, in obese children many diseases that normally do not occur in children begin to surface. Conditions such as high blood pressure, palpitations, diabetes, which are chronic ailments start affecting children and limit the body’s capacity to grow and develop in a proper manner. It also has a high impact on the way in which both physiological and psychological development takes place in children (Berkowitz et al, 2003). Thus, th e body is not able to perform to its optimal level because of the high weight, causing an effect on the physical development of the body. Most people think that obesity can cause only physical problems for the child. While it is true that obese children are more likely to turn into obese adults who have an increased risk of heart diseases and strokes, it is also needs to be

Autobiography on how my life led to the decision of becoming a nurse Essay

Autobiography on how my life led to the decision of becoming a nurse - Essay Example I have overcome many obstacles and have made many difficult decisions to get where I am in life. The journey that I was meant to take has recently become clear. Ultimately, this decision was there all along; however I did not recognize it or realize that the calling of a nurse was one that was right for me. After having spent what seemed like forever wandering and searching for my life’s purpose, I reached the lowest point in my life. After much thought, I decided I needed to go back to school; yet my options were limited as the only thing I could afford was a technical school. I enrolled in a Medical Assistant School and instantly fell in love with the subject matter. For the first time in my life, I felt like a part of something greater than just the information that was being presented to me. I got a job the week I graduated and became a Medical Assistant in a large Allergy and Asthma practice. I went above and beyond my job and felt like this was finally the path I was meant to be on. My motivation kicked in and I knew this was what I needed to do; moreover, rather than it merely being a job, I craved more. I tried to figure out a way to go back to school in order to realize my dream of becoming a nurse, and there was no way I was going to settle for anything else. I wanted to go all the way and pursue my degree; however, the biggest obstacle at this point was purely financial. It just so happened that my older cousin moved in with my family at this time; because he too was feeling a little lost. The only thing that made him happy was looking back at memories he made while he was in the military. He kept talking about how much he needed motivation so that he could go to college and get a degree and how the military would now pay for it. This is when it all started to click for me. I finally realized this was what I needed to do to get where I wanted to go in life. I decided that I was

Issues Of Concreting In Hot Weather Construction Essay

Issues Of Concreting In Hot Weather Construction Essay It is important to take hot weather into consideration while building concrete projects because of its effects on the fresh and recently placed concrete. As of hot weather, the demand for water alone rises. This leads to rises water-cement ratio, and hence further leading to low potential strength. Also to be noted that higher temperatures gives rise to higher slump loss. Concrete cured at higher temperatures when compared with the concrete cured at ambient temperature, would not be as strong at the end of 28 days. It should be kept in mind that high temperatures, high velocity and low humidity can affect the quality of fresh concrete. The high rate of evaporation introduces early plastic shrinkage or drying shrinkage. Also the evaporation can remove the surface water which is necessary for hydration of the concrete unless proper curing methods are used. Rapid drops in the temperature introduce thermal cracks in the concrete structure. These occur when there are hot days followed by cool nights. High temperatures are largely responsible for cracking in massive concrete structures. Statement of purpose The main purpose for this report is to throw light on the problems arising during concreting in hot weather. And also to enumerate various methods via which the problems can be avoided to yield good throughput and quality for the concrete developed. Concreting in hot weather can produce adverse effects on the quality of concrete and structure of building for which it is to be used. So it is important to take into consideration hot weather when planning concrete projects. As the temperature of the freshly mixed concrete reaches 25 °C which is approximately 77  °F, it has adverse effects on the quality of concrete. Also to be kept in mind, that temperature above 32 °C i.e. 90 °F with lack of protected environment for concrete finishing and placement could lead to difficulty in producing quality concrete required. Among other problems, hot weather conditions can lead to rapid rate of evaporation. Problems and effects of concreting in hot weather From ACI Materials Journal : Impact of Extremely Hot Weather and Mixing Method on Changes in Properties of Ready Mixed Concrete during Delivery by Abdulaziz I. Al-Negheimish and Abdulrahman M. Alhozaimy Figure Nomograph The successful hot weather concretion can be done by assessing the factors which affect the quality and stability of concrete and then planning to minimize their affects. Hydration of concrete can be seen as an exothermic reaction, which means it generates heat and also the reaction rate is faster when the concrete is hot. The main concern we identify here is not the air temperature but the concrete temperature. When concrete settles, it sucks up water, which causes crystallization of particles around the aggregate particles. When the concrete is hot, the reaction rate is faster and hence crystals are formed rapidly, but they dont have time to grow strong. Initial strength might be high but the strength seen after 28 days suffers highly. It is seen that if the concretes temperature is higher by about 18 °C the compressive strength decreases by 10%.The other problem which arises while concreting during hot weathers is surface drying. There occurs more and more drying and surface lin kage if we have hot concrete, sun shining very hot and hot dry winds blowing. Also we should take into consideration the plastic shrinkage cracking caused in the hot weather. If outside temperature is very high i.e. the concrete is colder than the atmospheric temperature, the chances are that the water will be condensing on the surface rather than the surface drying out. There arises a major problem when the air is cooler than concrete. Contractors mainly aim to go for cooler concrete in hot weather. In this case too, hot weather can cause plastic shrinkage cracking, this case occurs then the concrete temperature is high and the humidity is low. In order to know, whether evaporation could pose a problem or not we use nomograph. By knowing air temperature, concrete temperature, wind velocity and relative humidity, we arrive at the rate of evaporation. Accordingly, if the rate is greater than 0.1 pounds per square foot per hour, shrinkage cracking is possible. Hot dry sub grades and frameworks may also lead to cracks by absorbing water from the mix. Heat and concrete are also challenged by thermal differentials. This means that one part of the concrete is warmer while the other part is colder. It is observed that if the differential is greater than somewhere around 20 °F, then cracks are likely to be formed. Effects on the characteristics of the concrete formed Setting time The setting time of the concrete decreases with the increase in the concrete temperature. This in turn gives us very less time to place compact and finish the concrete. Workability and slump Higher temperatures of the concrete reduce the workability of the concrete more rapidly with time. Addition of water to improve workability of the mixture decreases the strength and increases the permeability of the concrete. Compressive Strength High concrete temperature and high water requirement can lead to lower 28 day strength. In case more water is added so as to maintain workability, it leads us to higher water-cement ratio which results in loss of strength and durability. This increases the drying shrinkage of the hardened concrete. In the opposite case, if the water is not added the reduced setting time and lower workability increase the potential inappropriate compaction, this results in formation of cold joints and poor finishing. Concrete temperature From Concrete Journal (2001) Properties of Hot Weather Concrete and Countermeasures at Practice. During hot weather conditions, temperature rise in the concrete may happen due to heat of hydration. The development of thermal gradients may lead to thermal cracking in the concrete slab. Although at higher concrete temperature, the early strength is higher, its long term affects a low strength of the concrete, where as the concrete cured at lower temperature has higher strength. Its can be seen in the laboratory tests that the increased exposure to higher temperature directly affects the strength of the concrete after it has hardened. Poor surface appearance Increased rate of evaporation leads to drying and stiffening of the surface. Among the cases of flatwork, this can lead to premature finishing of the surface, trapping some amount of water within the mix. The compacter layer (from finishing) causes rise in the water to be trapped below the surface and hence deboning of the surface. There may occur colour differences on the surface due to different rates of hydration and cooling. Plastic Shrinkage Cracking From American Concrete Institute: Journal titled Plastic Shrinkage Cracking and Evaporation Formulae by Paul J. Uno. As discussed widely above, hot weather accelerates evaporation and loss in moisture from the surface. Plastic Shrinkage cracking occurs when the shrinkage stress exceeds tensile strength of the concrete. Plastic Shrinkage cracks formed may be quite deep because concrete has little capacity to resist shrinkage stress. Also the cracks continue to widen and form more and more cracks until the stress is relieved. It is also to be noted that a few times the Plastic Shrinkage Cracks reach to the free edges where unrestrained stress can occur. Thermal cracking From American Concrete Institute: Journal titled  Retempering of Prolonged-Mixed Concrete with Admixtures in Hot Weather by Dan Ravina. Concrete is exposed to thermal cracking when the concrete is initially placed and the interior of the concrete is exposed to heat rising from the settlement of the concrete and the heat of hydration. Rapid changes in the temperature on the surface of the concrete such as hot days followed by cool night leads to formation of temperature gradient. The warmer interior restrains the colder exterior, which wants to contract. If the differential of the temperature is large then thermal cracking may occur. The insulating effect is more in massive thick concrete, and hence they are more at risk towards the thermal cracking effect. Precautions or Rules to be followed for hot weather concretion From Science Direct : Journal titled Water evaporation from freshly placed concrete surfaces in hot weather by G.S. Hasanain, T.A. Khallaf and K. Mahmood. and From Concrete Journal (2001) Properties of Hot Weather Concrete and Countermeasures at Practice. Precautions should be taken to reduce the effects from high temperature against concreting. Use of water reducing, set retarding mixtures can help cutting the effects of high temperature concreting. In the cases where extreme heat conditions are unavoidable, chilled water or ice can be used as part of mixing water. Other methods such as sprinkling and shading the aggregate before mixing can also help lower the temperature of the concrete. Condition where theres low humidity and high winds, windbreaks and sunscreens or mist fogging can be used to avoid plastic shrinkage cracks in the slabs. Many of the following suggestions can be used depending on the atmospheric conditions and requirement type of the concrete to be formed: Concrete mixture designs can include set retarders, water reducers in order to gain lowest cement factor. Modification in the mixtures as appropriate i.e. changes in the composition percentages of retarders, moderate heat hydration cements, and Pozzolanic mixtures can be done to shield against hot weather concretion. Enough manpower can be employed so that as soon as the concrete is delivered, it is quickly placed, finished and cured. Mixing water and cool aggregates can be added to concrete mixture to reduce its initial temperature. Using a concrete consistency can allow rapid placement and consolidation. Sometimes in extreme conditions, we can adjust the time of concrete placement to take advantage of the time of the day when it is cooler i.e. early morning or night placement. Fogging the area above the concrete placement so as to raise the level of relative humidity can help satisfy the demand for moisture from the air. Rate of evaporation can be monitored using a nemograph which charts temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity. Covering of the placed slabs should be done with the damp sand beds rather than polythene sheets if barrier is required. When forms are removed, curing should be done to the newly exposed surfaces of the concrete. It should be noted that aliphatic alcohols are not a substitute for curing compounds and it is advised to not to used them. Aliphatic alcohols are used for initial screeding and finishing operations. Although aliphatic alcohols are compatible with most of the curing compounds, it is a good practise to check their compatibility in case the two products are purchased from different manufacturers. Another cut down can be done at the addition of water while at job site. Addition of water should only be done at the arrival only to adjust the slump. Later additions should be avoided. In no circumstances should the addition of water exceed 2 or 2.5 gallons per cubic yard. Water should never be added to concrete which is older than 1.5 hours. Finishing should be done as soon as the sheen has left the surface, this should be followed by immediate curing. Curing should be continued for 3 days and covering should be done to prevent evaporation or a liquid curing compound should be used. A very useful idea is to add white pigment to the covering liquid curing compound so that it reflects the heat away from the concrete surface. Moistening of sub grades, forms and reinforcement before it is placed. However it should be noted that standing water in such cases should be avoided. Field test cylinder should be protected by shading and preventing evaporation. Field curing boxes with ice may be used to maintain temperature of 60 °F -80 °F for the cylinders. Minimizing the effects of hot weather conditions Controlling the concrete temperature From Concrete Journal (2001) Properties of Hot Weather Concrete and Countermeasures at Practice. AS 1379 states requirement that temperature of the concrete at the time of delivery should be from 5 to 35 °C. In cases of higher ambient temperature, the supplier needs to take precautions to ensure that the concrete temperature is delivered is within the allowable range. There are a number of methods available to control the temperature of the concrete. This includes adjusting the temperature of the ingredients of the concrete mixture. It should be taken into consideration that since the aggregates constitute the bulk of the concrete and have the highest heat capacity, the effect the temperature of the freshly mixed concrete greatly. But the temperature of the aggregates is the most difficult task to control. The temperature of the cement doesnt affect much in this case as it has low specific heat and relatively small amount in the mixture. Liquid nitrogen can be injected into the concrete while mixing to lower the temperature. The latent thermal energy of the gas cools the mixtu re drastically. Although this process is economical only on major projects involving vast amounts of concrete for construction. Admixtures From Science Direct : Journal titled Water evaporation from freshly placed concrete surfaces in hot weather by G.S. Hasanain, T.A. Khallaf and K. Mahmood. Various types of admixtures can help lower the temperature and also reduce the evaporation from the surface. Water reducers can be used to decrease the amount of water required to bring concrete to a workable condition. Set retarders delay the amount of time required for setting of the concrete and hence increase the strength of the material. Although set retarders should be used with caution as rapid dry of surface is occurring at the same time. This can lead to finishing of the surface while below it is still spongy due to the set retarders. Thos can lead to non-uniformity on the surface. Cement type From Concrete Journal (2001) Properties of Hot Weather Concrete and Countermeasures at Practice. There can also occur additional benefits while choosing the type of cement. For example using slower hydration cements such as type LH with lower heat development rate can give extra time for placing and finishing. This also reduces concrete temperature and risk of thermal cracking upon cooling of the concrete. Cement content From Concrete Journal (2001) Properties of Hot Weather Concrete and Countermeasures at Practice. The temperature increase due to hydration of cement in a given concrete is directly proportional to its cement content. Therefore we should choose cement content depending upon our requirement of strength and durability. Conclusion Since hot weather concreting involves various challenges to be faced by the project supervisor as well as the workers. Proper pre-planning and organisation of the project can lead to good formation of concrete with good durability and strength. Successful placing and finishing producing high quality concrete can be done at 35 °C. A must use of nemograph should be done to monitor the rate of evaporation so that appropriate resources and measure could be taken depending on the rate of evaporation. No doubt Hot weather poses great difficulties for concreting but development of new technologies, techniques and compounds can further reduce the adverse effects.

Bullying Essay

The issue of bullying may seem like something that should not be taken seriously, and it is quite often something we are all likely to neglect. If you place yourself in the shoes of the victim, the issue is in fact not a joke, but extremely serious. I think that there should be consequences for bullies because they should not be able to get away with hurting other children. Simply yelling at a kid for bullying another will not do anything to change the bully’s mind at all. Getting detention or in school suspension seems to not fix the problem of bullying. They will keep bullying and continue to create more problems for the victim. Bullying is a serious issue in today’s society. Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year and approximately 160,000 of those students skip school every day because of it. Most bullying takes place in school and 1 in 4 teachers see nothing wrong with bullying and will only interfere 4 percent of the time. Teacher’s that witness bullying and don’t do one thing about it is a huge problem because then the bullies don’t learn that the bullying is wrong. In my opinion, other than yelling at a kid for bullying, there should be more consequences that the bully should face. I would suggest the following consequences be put in place. First offense would be in school suspension. Second offense would be in school suspension and counseling. I think this would be effective because maybe kids will now see repercussions for their actions. I think it would be a better idea to have more consequences for the bully because it will give them the opportunity to look at the situation in the eyes of the person that they hurt. There are many benefits to punishing a bully. One benefit is the bully is aware that they are targeting someone in an unfair way. Being aware is one of the first steps to changing your bad behavior. Another benefit is the victim can be more comfortable going to school and can rest a sure that the bullying will stop, otherwise there will be further consequences. This will not only be beneficial to the victims in the school, but also to the authority figures because they will no longer be a problem. Disciplining a bully will result in multiple benefits. Most do not think much of bullying but in reality it is a widespread problem. Being personally targeted by others whether in school or out of school can tend to have a negative effect upon the victim, and may not always have a great turnout. I think that there should be more consequences for a bully’s actions.

Steroids in baseball

As time has evolved and science in medicine has grown, it seems that steroid use has become more and more popular amongst baseball players. We now find our baseball players in the â€Å"Steroids Era†. Steroids help athletes become stronger and more muscular, which is clearly necessary when trying to make a home run. Many people believe that using steroids is considered cheating and nothing is more â€Å"Un- American† as cheating. Steroids didn't make it to baseballs banned substance list until 1991, and testing for major league players did not begin until the 2003 season. But, the MLB has decided that steroids use will no longer be tolerated. Steroids use has become very popular, and it seems that we have more players admitting to the use. It is impossible to know how many players actually use the drug, but players have come forward to have us assume that this drug as well as other performance-enhancing drugs have been around for a long time. According to Huff Post Sport s, â€Å"In 2003 , David Wells claimed that up to 40 percent of major leaguers used steroids.Jose Canseco estimated that 80 percent of major leaguers had taken teroids and credited the drug for his entire career. † For a MLB player to credit a drug for his entire career Just simply sounds insane. In 2005, Jose Canseco released a tell-all book, Juiced, about his experience with steroids in his career. In the book, Canseco named several other players, including Mark McGuierre, Ivan Rodriguez, Juan Gonzalez, and Jason Giambi, as steroid users. The list of baseball players associated with steroid use goes on. In our book Envision in Depth they explain what Canseco said about steroid use.He says, â€Å"Different steroids do different things: if you ant Just to build muscle mass, one sort will do; if you want to run fast, there are steroids to increase your fast twitch muscle fibers†(437) Canseco claims to have used Deca-Durabolin, Winstrol, Equipoise, and Anvar. He also use d human growth hormones, which explains how he put on 25 pounds of solid muscle in Just a few months. Baseball players rely on steroids use to enhance their performance. In baseball's long storied history only 25 men have ever slammed more than 500 homers, 10 joining the elite group between 1998-2009 and six of those – McGwire, Alex Rodriguez,Manny Ramirez, Rafael Palmeiro, Gary Sheffield and MLS's all-time home run king, Barry Bonds, who have all been linked to drugs. This obviously includes being more recognized by the fans, but also more money in their pocket. The better a player is the more money they will receive. Everyone wants money we cannot deny that. Improved performances in players will elevate a players on- base percentage. According to Huff Sports, â€Å"An increase in OPS of . 100 leads to an estimated salary increase of two million dollars. The athletic performance would also increase a layers product sales, and endorsement deals. With steroid use it seems tha t the game of baseball has become a little tougher, and more violent. Players are getting hit harder by other players running to the base and by the balls hit into the field. Players should begin to wear more protective gear. The types ot injuries seen most commonly in baseball today result trom muscles ripping away from tendons and Joints that can no longer support them, which was typically not seen years ago. Steroids has side effects which may cause health problems. Many athletes may be higher doses than the average in order to get better results in the game. It comes with serious side effects. According to Mayo Clinic, † Men may develop baldness, infertility, and shrunken testicles. † They may also experience high blood pressure, heart and circulatory problems, drug dependence, and psychiatric disorders such as depression. These athletes may begin to use other drugs to counter balance the side effects. Addiction may come from all of this. It is important to care about the health problems of these MLB players. While steroids use may improve a players chance of hitting that next home run or breaking the sprint record, and players may make an extreme upgrade on their income. The use of steroids goes against the American vision of hard work because using steroids does become a way of cheating. What is this teaching the little ones looking up to all the baseball players? I dont believe that steroids use is setting a good example. I also do not believe that steroids use is beneficial in the long run. These MLB players are putting themselves through so many health risks that I do not elieve are worth it in the end.

The Vietnam War And Iraq Wars - 1214 Words

Final Exam Paper The Vietnam War and Iraq wars have many more similarities then the common American would think. Both were fighting gorillas in a foreign land in a way that the soldiers were never trained or prepared for, against a foe that despise America as a whole. However I believe the biggest difference is the American publics view and attitude toward each of the two wars. As well as the attitude of the soldiers in each of the wars in 2001 after the September 11 attacks we had people like Pat Tillman give up a career in the NFL and volunteer for the Army. The uprising of pride and numbers plumped to the start of that war. That is greatly different then the attitude during Vietnam when the US government had to institute a draft to help the numbers in soldiers. While people in the streets chanted â€Å"hell no we wont go† In Redeployment we get a bunch of different voices and circumstances of a bunch of different voices to what it is to be a war veteran. In clays writings we see Iraq as an awful place like so many of us have seen in movies and pictures of real footage. But what comes across even more is the human condition that comes as an extreme and how many issues our vets really go through coming back from combat. Throughout all the different stories we get it we get the strong undertones from the author of the loss of the war in Iraq.
